AoW 10: Long Spells at Screen Create Health Risk

Link to glogster: http://dbrando97.edu.glogster.com/glog-7185-2807/

Audience: The article’s audiences are people who engage in activity that involves little to no physical activity on a daily basis, the average news reader and even kids; the article is published on a webpage called Social Studies for Kids. You can imply the above mentioned since the article’s purpose is to persuade and stop the reader of having this unhealthy life style. The article’s vocabulary also provides a better idea of its audience. Given that words like “lipoprotein lipase” are used, you can deduce that among the reader’s audience there are people who are familiar with scientific terms.

Purpose: The article’s purpose is both to inform and persuade. The author exposes new research and facts in order to inform of the danger that having a static life style represents. Towards the end, the author proposes solutions to fight this unhealthy behavior; the author is now trying to persuade the reader of having a more active life style.

Tone: The article’s tone is objective and the author avoids displaying his personal opinions regarding the topic. Although the fact he is concerned for the public’s health is evident, the author only states facts and research.

AOW 12: Does the Constitution hava a heart for boobies?

AOW 12 <– Word Doc.

TONE: The article’s tone is calm but sarcastic. Although the author is objective and backs up both of the sides with valid arguments, he never shows sign of unconformity; he never uses harsh vocabulary or demonstrates upset. Also, I recognized the article’s tone as sarcastic because he mocks the phrase I Love Boobies repeatedly as to show how he finds the braclet as juvenile and unnecessary. Additionally,

AUDIENCE: The article’s audiences are teenagers since they are the intended customers of the mentioned braclet. Also, among the article’s audience, school administrators are likely to be present given that the article repeatedly punishes them and hints of what they should do to improve their administration.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the article is to inform the public about what is happening regarding the ban of given braclets at some schools. I consider that the article’s author choses this news in order to explain and complain of how intolerant and absurd institutions like schools can be to even punish an innocent campaign to fight breast cancer.

EXTENSION:http://www.keep-a-breast.org/blog/i-love-boobies-bracelets-causing-a-ruckus/

I chose this page as my extension because it belongs to the foundation that produces the braclets. This webpage provides an idea of the arguments that back up the use of the braclet. In many occasions, the arguments rest upon the idea of freedom of speech and on the fact the braclets support a good cause. Learning about these arguments provides a better idea of what people in favor of the braclets believe.

AoW 12 Interest: Captive Audience: Has Advertising in  School Gone Too Far?

AoW 12 Interest <– Word Doc.

TONE: The article’s author seems indignant and bitter of ad placement at school since she sees it as unnecessary and abusive. Her tone is evident when she explains the situation from the student’s point of view. On the first paragraph she asks the reader to pretend to be on the student’s situation while she illustrates given student as a victim of excessive advertising. Also, vocabulary as ’emblazoned’ reveals her tone as annoyed and upset.

AUDIENCE: The article’s intended audience is mainly parents and preferably, parents who have their kids enrolled at school where the advertising mentioned is present. You understand this after recognizing how the article repeatedly mentions the parents’ opinions and how it describes what all this advertising represents for the parents. For example, on the third paragraph of the article the author explains the parents’ opinion about advertising at school and how they much prefer it than to have programs cut. “‘They don’t like to see programs getting cut”‘. Also, another clue that back’s up my idea of intended audience is how the author mentions a lot of economic data that would only interest grown-ups or in this case, the students’ parents.

PURPOSE: The article has two different purposes. First, the article wishes to inform the reader of this advertising and what it  represents for the students and their parents. Second, the article also aims to persuade the reader that these force-feeding brands are abusive and dangerous.

I chose the two pages shown above because they provide legal feedback regarding this situation. They dictate that law views acts like this, of abusive ad placement, as harassment.

AoW 9: President Obama’s State of the Union Address

AoW 9<– Word Doc.

TONE: I would describe Obama’s tone as nostalgic, hopeful and concerned. Throughout his speech it is clear that he is conscious of America’s present situation (concerned) ;he admits a decline in some aspects as in education where he acknowledges that America has fallen to 9th in the proportion of young people with a college degree. Also, he seems nostalgic of the past and how life seemed to be easier; this is evident when he addresses the economy and recalls how comfortable life used to be when there was less competition. Finally, Obama also expresses a sense of hope; for example he ends the part of his speech regarding the economy with the following phrase: “The competition for jobs is real. But this shouldn’t discourage us. It should challenge us.”.

AUDIENCE: Obama’s audience is the entire American population. The Americans are concerned about their country’s situation regarding education, the economy and immigration; the speech mentions all of these. Obama constantly uses the word ‘we’ this suggests that the speech is intended to Americans as in ‘we’, Americans.

PURPOSE: Obama’s purpose is to inform America of its countries current situation but at the same time, to inspire Americans of fighting for a brighter future and a better country. Obama explains America’s situation but also tries to inspire a sense of hope upon the Americans. “It is time to move forward as a nation.

EXTENSION:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyXYot6wHuE

I chose as my extension a video that honors the US Army because I believe all Americans can take pride on their sacrifice and service for the country. The US Army represents what America is all about and serves as inspiration to us all.

AoW 9 Interest: Losing the Race for Intelligence

AoW 9 Interest <– Word Doc.

TONE: I would describe the article’s tone as playful, mocking and incredulous. The article exposes its tone throughout the use of world like ‘stupidity'(used to describe passivity and tolerance regarding questionable religious theories) that clearly sets a tone of mockery and disbelief towards what is described as an absurd reality.

AUDIENCE: Most likely, the article’s intended audience is those who either advocate or avoid teaching about creationism and theories that go against science. The whole article criticizes teachers who tolerate this type of theories; this suggests that the audiences most likely are science professors or people who seem themselves directly affected by their teachings (students).

PURPOSE: The article’s purpose is to persuade the reader that creationism and it’s acceptance is a primitive idea that avoids progress and intelligence and as a result should be abolished. The article’s purpose is made evident as the author describes given theories as the stupidity that crept over the intelligent giant; the intelligent giant being an objective society.

EXTENSION:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSxgnu3Hww8

I chose this video as my extension because it attacks creationism by providing logical evidence that supports the theory of evolution and other ideas that go against religious beliefs. I think this video relates to the article because they both argue against creationism. Understanding the arguments against creationism is necessary because it gives us a more objective outlook of the world.
